It seems forever since I added any news, but I have been busy in the background building new websites, redesigning existing websites and helping people with some of the add-ons necessary to have a website that performs it’s role for your business or organisation.

The new websites cover a range of activities; payroll specialists, shuttle services, vineyards, property investors, yoga and self realisation, food takeaways, photography and of course sport.

Other websites have been updated to include ecommerce options, redesigned to be more responsive, and as always updates for search engine optimisation and marketing.

A lot of the work still involves helping clients get the plan right so that their social media,  website and marketing campaigns work to make their business better and their workload easier which is really what we all want.

Below you can see some of these sites.

As the year ends, many clients take a well-earned break to recharge the batteries for a new year, and I seem to be playing catch-up on several projects, some work, some family orientated and some cricket after sneeking a day in at the Hagley Pavilion in Christchurch yesterday for the NZ v Sri Lanka Cricket Test.

Watching NZ v Sri Lanka Cricket Test from inside Hagley Pavilion – no wind here!

I thought I would take a look back at what has happened over the last 12 months and mention some things you might need to consider in 2019.

Google made mobile friendly websites a priority in 2018

In the first half of 2018, Google rolled out its new Mobile First Index, placing more importance on the mobile version of your website by making it the first to be seen in the search results. This means that your website must have mobile-friendly design. Most modern websites are built for this, but some older websites that aren’t mobile friendly will be losing ranking, so consider upgrading soon rlse it may affect your bottom line.

Brighter Colors and Bold Fonts

Modern design styles allow you to use a much wider array of fonts, both Google fonts and other traditional fonts, so you’ll need to look at type font that stands out. Bold fonts help users focus on your content, while the white space makes it easier to read and skim through. Together, they’re a perfect combination. Because people typically only spend a few seconds looking at your pages, you need to catch their attention quickly. Using colors and designs that stand out helps, but don’t overdo it! The aim is to provide your visitors with an easy and enjoyable experience so that they stay on your site for as long as possible and ideally convert into paying customers whether online or enquiring about your services.

More animation.

These days you see websites with more and more animation – whether words or images moving, fading and sliding in and more. When used some of the best ideas are the scroll animation triggers which ask users to keep scrolling down your website pages often with down arrows or call to action buttons.

Summary

While much more is happening today too (I have a list below) some fundamentals never change, and if you have a website with an online store, or showcasing your services, just like your brick and mortar store if it gets old and shabby looking, less people visit.

For your website to work for you, you need to understand what your potential customers really want (not what you think they might want),  you need to work on content marketing, paid advertisements, sales funnels, conversion optimization, search engine optimization, and much more, via social media channels and other means to drive people to your website, and then to do business with you..

Summary of what you need to think about having on your website today.

  • WordPress is a great platform for self-managed websites, but if you are testing an idea a Wix website might be a cheap option to start with.
  • Responsiveness – websites need to be mobile friendly
  • Better imagery – make use of the free images to enhance your blogs, news and social media offerings.
  • Video – even better is using video for your posts, in design as backgrounds, dividers, or as short product/service explainers
  • Storytelling – this never goes away – your story helps make you appear professional and trustworthy
  • Divide between Custom and DIY
  • Flat Design (long-scrolling homepages)
  • Landing pages – these are now huge for websites, or to promote specialist services, products or events
  • Animation – to enhance visitor experience, not as a gimick.

Those that know me will also know that I have another job these days as CEO of both the South Canterbury & Mid Canterbury District Cricket Associations. Effectively I am known as the “cluster manager”. While this isn’t a full-time position as it is seasonal, my summer becomes busier, not more holiday orientated.

However something that crosses over from my web design / online consultancy work into cricket is using social media to promote events.

I will not profess to be a graphic design guru, so more often than not use an awesome free tool available on the website canva.com. Free to join they have numerous free templates for just about any occasion and you can edit them online and download to your computer for use later, or directly to your social media page.

For those clients looking for inspiration for your social media campaigns, upcoming sales, etc I recommend checking them out.

Below is my own gallery of a few promos I have put together for cricket this coming season.

While I have been very quiet when it comes to adding posts to my website I have been busy working, especially now it is much more pleasant staying inside during the winter months.

However it was nice last Friday evening to be part of the Organising committee for a cricket tournament that was awarded “Event of the Year” at the South Canterbury Sportsman of the Year Awards. A big night in South Canterbury with over 500 in attendance and guest speaker Hamish Bond, so as CEO of SC Cricket (thats where I am when you can’t find me in the summer months) and basically secretary for the committee that ran the South Island Primary Tournament it was great for our event to be recognised. I even got a written thank you from the local MP!

Here’s my team, with the younger guys having to crouch down at the back!

I am a big fan of the Divi Builder plugin for simplifying the ability of clients to easily add columns, Calls to Action, Buttons, Videos,Pricing Tables and to help create their own layouts for different pages.

This system makes all those options much easier using drag and drop sections.

However, while I see the huge benefits in time-saving, the potential in designing and much more, often for clients it is all gobbledegook whether I tell them it is easier or not, so now I am slowly adding a collection of video guides to my website thaqt I think you will find useful, and save you trawling through the 100s of videos out there to find one you understand (I have done some of that for you).

Over time I expect to make some of my own to add, but for now you can check out the video guides here

While it has been over a year since my website has been available to the general public, I have still been busy creating new websites, editing existing client websites and helping them with social media campaigns, online shopping, online marketing, seo strategies, newsletters and many of the other things an online presence demands; demands and neccessities that continue to grow.

Talking with a client the other day I sometimes wish for the old dial-up Internet days again when things didn’t happen so fast – of course I don’t really want to go back to those access speeds, but the changes with broadband certainly make things happen quicker.

If you browse around the website you will find several pages without content as yet, but like a builder my house gets fixed last, so these pages will be updated as time and energy allows, but for now I am busy working on new exciting client projects and keeping in touch with existing clients who all have their own projects on the go to it seems.

Don’t forget to email me if you have any questions, it costs nothing to ask!

A client of mine has recently entered the publishing world with the release of her science fiction fantasy novel “A Timely Dream” written in collaboration with her eldest brother who has written many stories. This story is part of a trilogy and the description on Amazon says;

“Felicity is a Senior Caregiver in an elite Rest Home. When she has her curiosity aroused by a poster placed the wrong way round in a window across the valley from her work place, she organises an investigation. Little does she know that what she finds will change time itself, both for the elderly residents in her care, and those she knows and loves. In a story that breaks down the boundaries of time, the future is threatened by jealousy and greed, the present is fuelled by passion and love while the past is eased by the healing powers of memories finally understood.”

Within these pages, you will find laugh-out-loud humour, drama, intrigue, passion and love.   All with a quirky flavour.

You can learn more about the book on the website “The Carrisbrook Trilogy” and it is available in Hardcover, Paperback or Kindle versions.
